Atletico Madrid 1-1 Liverpool (5-4 on pens): Liverpool lost Audi Cup on penalties

The much hyped Audi Cup finally got over with Atletico Madrid thrashing Liverpool by 5-4 on penalties at Allianz Arena. The two teams were tied 1-1 after 90 minutes, and the shootout finished 5-4.

The crowned winners had led the majority of the game with Keidi Bare’s first-half opener. Whereas Liverpool levelled in the closing stages when Divock Origi won an uncertain penalty, which Roberto Firmino calmly dispatched to set up a shoot-out.

Bare gave the Rojiblancos the lead with a header from close range, one of the few highlights of a dull first half. Roberto Firmino tied things up from the penalty spot after the break.

Unfortunately for the Reds, Jordan Henderson was the only player to miss a spot-kick in the shoot-out, and Felipe Luis bagged the winner.

After a brilliant performance against Bayern Munich 3-0 in the first game, Jurgen Klopp opted to rest a number of key players, including Philippe Coutinho and Mohamed Salah, and his second string lacked the creative spark needed to break down a stubborn Atletico defense.

There are many factors that have contributed to the two contrasting Liverpool’s performances in this Audi Cup. After thrashing Bayern Munich, Liverpool was riding high but Atletico proved to be an entirely different type of opponent to Bayern Munich.

Atletico men were on the more positive side with the players like Thomas, Keidi, Vrsaljko, and others. The team pushed hard to make their path to the final.

Apart from many changes, Klopp’s substitution decisions affected the game hugely. The substitutes struggled to make an impact on the game as rivals were playing tough on their defensive side. But then Origi went down dramatically in the Atletico box and the referee signaled for a penalty, with Firmino making no mistake from the spot. In the end, though, it counted for little as Atletico claimed the win.

Goalkeeper Danny Ward made a spectacular save to deny Angel Correa, and while the entire Reds defense stood still to watch the ball, Bare snuck in and easily headed home.
