The British Open 2018: Shubhankar Sharma is ready to make his dream debut at Carnoustie

The Indian rising golfer, Shubhankar Sharma is ready to make his dream debut at the 147th Open at Carnoustie. The 21-year-old had created tides in the Asian Tour after winning the Joburg Open last December and earned a coveted spot for the year’s third Major championship.

In one of his interviews, Sharma said that “That victory (Asian Tour) will stay with me for the rest of my life. It was my first win and I was literally playing ‘alone’ in South Africa. I will always remember the love and warmth I got from the local fans that week and, of course, the avenues it has opened up for me in life. Teeing it up for The Open is the best spin-off. I am really excited to be here.”

“Playing in The Open has been my ‘only’ dream, at one point of time, when I started playing golf. I have watched all the past editions on television and I would keep replaying the videos until I feel as if I have been played in The Open before,” he adds.

Sharma believes that his arduous training will help him face the challenges at Carnoustie, “My coach (Jesse Grewal) is here this week and we have worked hard on our game. My hitting was a bit off at the Irish Open, but I improved on it last week during the Scottish Open and am feeling better.

“We have discussed the strategy to tackle this course and I am confident I will have a good week.”

He is excited to tee-off at one of the toughest courses, Carnoustie. After creating headlines and winning two European Tour titles and played the Masters and US Open, the Chandigarh child is ready to tame the beast at Carnoustie.

Along with Sharma, winner of two European Tour titles, Anirban Lahiri will face the oldest golf championship of the world. The 31-year-old Lahiri is coming with his experience and will be playing the championship for the fifth times this year. While the young gun Sharma is playing his first Open and becomes the youngest Indian to do so.

Shubhankar is paired with 2017 Masters champion Sergio Garcia and American Bryson De Chambeau for the first two rounds and starts his campaign on Thursday. Lahiri is paired with Matt Kuchar and Peter Uihlein and will be playing before Sharma on the same day. Enjoy the Open 2018 live on DSport from 19th- 22nd July at 7:00 PM.
