The Indo International Premier Kabaddi League (IPKL) is an all-new sporting tournament that is happening in India for the first time ever. This could be a great opportunity for the Indian team to re-establish their supremacy on the Kabaddi turf and gain their fair share of limelight among other sports. Since the introduction of Kabaddi in the continental competition, except at the 2018 games, the Indian Kabaddi team has been an unbeatable force at the Asian Games.
In order to maintain the team’s legacy, there is a need to have a greater pool of players. Its main objective is to highlight the best talent and boost the possibility of winning. Also, the league is going to introduce a new sense of ownership to the players, as a part of its revenue will be distributed among the players, apart from their dedicated salaries and prize money. They will not be just the players but the stakeholders in the success of the league.
In an interview with an online portal, former Indian cricketer Virender Sehwag said, “It pained the whole nation including myself to see India lose their golden stranglehold in the Kabaddi competition at the Jakarta Palembang 2018 Asian Games. Kabaddi is a pride of the country including many such indigenous sports which all of us at some point grew up playing. When the organizers of IPKL came to me, I felt their ideas and passion would certainly help us regain our place at the pedestal of Asian and world Kabaddi. I wish the IPKL and all players all the very best in this new journey.”
The IPKL will see eight teams, namely the Bangalore Rhinos, the Chennai Challengers, Diler Delhi, Telegu Bulls, Pune Pride, Haryana Heroes, Mumbai Che Raje, and Rajasthan Rajputs.
All matches will be broadcast live on 1sports, MTV, and DD sport 8 PM onwards.
