The Laver Cup is back for the third time! Named after the tennis legend Rod Laver, the tournament was created to pay tribute to the greatest player of the twentieth century. The third edition of the Laver Cup will take place at the Palexpo, Geneva, from September 20-22, 2019.
This year, the Laver Cup and the ATP announced an agreement which will make the annual men’s team event, in which Europe takes on the rest of the world, an official part of the annual ATP Tour calendar.
The competition of tennis will bid two great teams against one other, Team World and Team Europe. For the last two Laver Cup, Team Europe has won the mantle of the winner, while Team World is still looking for their first win. Last year Team World gave a tough fight to Team Europe. They battled hard with great team spirit but eventually, Team Europe seized the victory by 13-8. Alexander Zverev fought back to beat Kevin Anderson and clinch the winning points in Chicago.
This year also Team Europe with its star players looks affirmative to get their straight third title. The competition held between the two teams will be Captained by Bjorn Bong of Team Europe, Vice-Captain Thomas Enquist and John Mcenroe of Team World, Vice-Captain Patrick McEnroe.
Irrefutably, the headliner match would be the FEDAL vs Team World. Spanish superstar Rafael Nadal will join Swiss maestro Roger Federer for the highly envisaged third edition of the Laver Cup. Federer and Nadal, FEDAL, two of the biggest players and stoutest rivals of all time, joined hands for the inaugural Laver Cup in Prague in 2017 and won, the memorable doubles match together. The grit and grace combined their ample powers for an iconic doubles pairing. They together broke the internet and gave the tennis world a dream match, a match for a lifetime. Fans are exhilarated about seeing this sizzling combination for one more time sharing the same court. This year’s tournament is also very special for Federer as it’s being played in his home country of Switzerland.
“I’m excited captain Bjorn has named both me and Rafa for Team Europe. We had a blast in Prague and it will be very special for me to team up with him again in Switzerland to try and defend our title,” Roger Federer said in an interview.
Stefanos Tsitsipas will be making his debut in the third edition of the Laver Cup and described the prospect of playing alongside Federer and Rafa as a “lifetime dream”. “I would describe it as a lifetime dream, sharing the court with them, experiencing things with them and getting to learn as much as I can,” Stefanos Tsitsipas said.
So get ready to witness one of the hottest rivalries in the current world tennis, the world No.7 Tsitsipas, one of tennis’ fastest-rising stars and Nick Kyrgios who will make his third appearance for Team World.
