MLS Cup 2018 Inside-out!

The 2018 MLS season that started at the beginning of the year (on 3rd March) is close to the finals. The last match of the season will be held on 9th December 6:15 AM (IST) that will decide which team will stand on the podium with the trophy, post the regular matches and playoffs.

The Host, Atlanta will play against Portland in this season’s final game at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium, in front of what is expected to be the record-breaking crowd at MLS Cup. Both, Atlanta and Portland took two extremely diverse paths to reach where they are in the Audi 2018 MLS Cup Playoffs.

For the Supporter’s Shield, Atlanta was domineering form the beginning but lost it to Red Bulls on D day. Somehow, after taking the second place they secured the first-round bye, hopping the knockout round. With a 4-1 score, they crushed New York City Football Club in the Conference Semi-final. Also, this season proved to be opportune as Atlanta finally managed to attain their first victory over Red Bulls. They hosted Leg 1 and wiped RBNY by 3-0 win.

Portland Timbers

On the other hand, Portland fought like complete troopers throughout the season. They won over FC Dallas in the Knockout Round and in the Conference Semi-final managed to outlast the Seattle Sounders. This grand series turned out to be maniacal that had drama with two extra-time goals. The 0-0 first left home draw didn’t dishearten them, as next, they went over to beat SKC by 3-2.

What’s on the line?

The most significant trophy of the league, in short, everything is on the line this Sunday. The second MLS Cup of Portland, a chance to gain their share of the limelight, and a chance to qualify for the CONCACAF Champions League. Legacies, ecstasy and superiority for Atlanta.

Looking at the format

Away goals do not matter in this game. The clubs have to play 30 minutes more if the game is tied after 90. The league’s champion will be declared by penalties if it’s still deadlocked.
