The Open 2018: All that happened in Round 1 at Carnoustie

The Open 2018

The Carnoustie links showed its different shades on day 1 of The Open 2018. After shooting a 5-under 66, the American native, Kevin Kisner took the lead in the first round. Kisner made the most of the favorable conditions for morning starters to lead by one from South Africa’s Erik van Rooyen and Zander Lombard and American Tony Finau.

An eagle at the sixth kick-started his round after a bogey at the fifth, and he went on a birdie spree down the back nine – sinking putts at 13, 14 and 15.

Taking the lead is one thing and holding it is quite another, with the likes of Justin Thomas, Rory McIlroy and Tiger Woods all within striking distance.

Last year’s Champion Golfer at Royal Birkdale, Jordan Spieth duly started well, with two birdies in the opening four holes and was well poised coming to the scary stretch that will scar many a card in the days ahead. He duly carded a double bogey at the 15th and bogeys at the 16th and 18th to finish on a one over par 72 – his strong position obliterated in an instant.
